Mets’ Mychal Givens reacts to trade by Cubs, reuniting with Buck Showalter

As Mychal Givens joins the New York Mets, he is greeted by a familiar face.

Mets manager Buck Showalter coached Givens during his rookie year with the Baltimore Orioles in 2015.


Givens spoke to’s Anthony DiComo about the trade.

Via a video tweeted by DiComo:

“I’m just excited, going to a contender and being back with Buck, who was my manager as a rookie. And seeing all the guys I played with and played agaisnt, i’m looking forward to it … when I saw that [Showalter] was manager for the Mets, I told people ‘They’re going to have a good manager and they’re going to contend,’ and look where they’re at right now … he’s one of the best managers I’ve had throughout my career, and he knows how to win games.”

The Mets picked up the righty reliever from the Chicago Cubs right before the 6 p.m. ET trade deadline on Tuesday. This season, he’s posting a 2.66 ERA with two saves in 40 2/3 innings pitched.

According to Spotrac, Givens is making $5 million this year and is under team control until 2024.
