Home Medical Care: eye medication

EYE MEDICATION

Ophthalmic ointments are most easily applied into the conjunctival sac. Use your thumb or forefinger to roll the lower eyelid gently downward and squeeze the ointment into the space exposed. Approaching the eye from the outside corner helps prevent the cat from seeing the tip of the tube and can facilitate instillation of the medication.

Eyedrops should be instilled with the cat’s nose tilted silghtly upward. Use one hand to grasp the cat’s muzzle and hold the lower lid open. Rest the base of the hand holding the dropper bottle above the eye to hold the upper lid open, then drop in the medication. Avoid touching the end of the ointment tube or dropper bottle to the eye to prevent contamination of the solution and injury to the eye.
